The Jab in MMA And Its Subtle Significance
When I decided to do a breakdown of the jab in MMA, I figured of all people to talk to about its efficacy, Firas Zahabi Head Coach of Tristar Gym in Montreal was probably the best person to “counsel”. In quick summation, my extended Renzo Gracie family member boiled it down to. “The Jab is the heart of Striking”. Indeed.
Several variations of it exist, but generally, it can be defined as While in a fighting stance. The lead fist is thrown straight ahead and the arm is fully extended. At the moment of impact, the pronated fist is generally held in a horizontal orientation with the palm facing the ground.
While it has anywhere from 3 to 20 variations, especially in a (Western) boxing context. I will mainly focus on the following uses and/or variations: Power (Thai), Defensive, Up, Rangefinding, Distance, and Jab feints, fakes, and combinations.
